I feel like this was indirectly some sorta Maui Jim/ Tommy Bahama advertisement 🤷♂️🤣
except on a northen Michigan Lake ;-)
Nice!
thanks , works great
Thanks for the video! Again, great explanation.
thanks for the comment. I'm trying to show the "why" things happen.
Thanks for the advice. Great explanation!
Thanks for commenting!
Thanks!
you're welcome!
Very good ! Not seen on other vids about fly casting
Thanks, I'm trying to show the "Why " of all these techniques.
Great idea! I’ve been casting at my bird bath and garden benches to build my accuracy. I also use the orange lids for Home Depot buckets. Can’t reel them in. I’ll check out your website.
Thanks , I like the orange lid Idea!
how about gluing 2' of leader to the fly line and then put on a tippet ring?
That would work too!
Mike, this is great. It takes a long time to learn by trial and error. I wish I had your videos years ago.
Thanks for the comment I'm glad it helped. Trust me I've made all the mistakes!
bada bing bada boom
Sound advice Mike. Loving your videos
Thanks for the support
Good advice ! Thanks . What type of line are you using to practice with? It looks like a thick yarn.
Its a "teaching " rod about 3ft long with a poly rope line. Easier to show students techniques.
Very interesting approach, Iike the concept to pull the line instead of throw it.
sometimes its hard to put into words what you already know.
Great video Mike on an important skill to learn in becoming a proficient caster based on fishing conditions.
thanks, I use tis cast alot !
Fixed another mistake for me, thank you sir
I'm still discovering my mistakes!
Very important and helpful one, thank you.
thanks!
Very good idea!!!
Thanks. look at $5 fly tying vise too
Good advise
Thanks!
This answered a very important question for me: why is my cast curving? Thank you sir
Glad this helps!
Fantastic. Blindingly obvious, but not until someone says! Thanks
thanks
Thank you sir. My issue is that when I cast when my line straightens out in front it then jogs left so my line lays on the water in a large C shape. I can get the line out pretty far, but the accuracy is garbage due to the curve. I am right handed. Any idea why this is happening?
It may have to do with the angle of the cast. remember if there were no ground the fly line would go through the earth in a full circle. try to make your cast as vertical as possible and see if that fixes the problem. you are accidentally doing a positive curve cast . see my video ua-cam.com/video/69LTwxMePHM/v-deo.html
@@MikeMouradian thank you sir!
I have been fly fishing since the 1950's and I always used a metal eyelet with barbs to push inside the fly line. The barbs prevents the eyelet from pulling out of the inside of the fly line. Then I tie on my leader and then used blood knot or similar to put on tippet if necessary for trout or other clear water fishing.
I remember those from years ago, but haven't seen them recently. Seem like a smart idea.
I seem to have difficulty with this cast. I will give it a try your way. Thanks for sharing this.
Super helpful thanks
Thanks for comment
@@MikeMouradian thanks for the lesson. Really appreciate it
The standard technique we used as fly instructors years ago to explain this was - "peel, pluck, pause, pat". We would say 'it's not about brute force, it's about storing energy in the rod'. Peel the line off the water, accelerating a bit then a plucking action to cast it backwards, then pause to let it straighten out and load the rod, then pat it forward with the rod unloading its tension. Alongside this explanation we showed them how they pluck and pause the rod not far off the vertical in order to create tight loops that do the work for you. To reinforce this understanding we sometimes tucked the butt of the rod temporarily into their jacket sleeve just to show that the rod should not be too loose in their wrist. One way you can convince them that this physics works is to get them to hold the rod horizontally in front of them and cast sideways with very short movement and they can feel the line pulling out of the rings. Being a good teacher is the hard bit.
I use the sleeve technique all the time. The teacher part takes as much technique as the casting . I taught High school for 30 yrs and then taught at the University of Michigan, teachers how to teach.
Good vid buddy! Ty! Have you tried tenkara? Keep it going!
It seems like the same logic of line thickness in terms of presentation would also apply to the leader. If you use the entire length of a 9 4x leader and the you add 4 feet if tippet you affecting your ability to load the rod. Would it be beneficial to reduce the real thin part of the leader too?
Only if you were in a very small stream . The leader doesn't load the rod. It mostly delivers the fly. So it depends on the type of presentation you need . a dry fly would need a delicate presentation so a thin leader is important but a streamer, not so much. If you were regulary fishing a small stream you could build your whole leader with shorter peices.
Great video. Makes perfect sense!
Thanks Mike! It does take some restructuring of the brain to go from "the lure pulls the line" to "the line delivers the fly". It's a physics thing, a math thing, a patience thing.
Its all in your head!
Hey buddy. Thanks again for your content. Learning so much and smiling….. Ty
thanks for te comment, it means a lot.
Great tip. It is so important but so hard to achieve! The most challenging is to follow vertical plane when we have the rod in an angle of eg. 20°. Especially when we do not watch our back cast.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for sharing this tip, sir. You seem like a good teacher!
Fantastic tip! Thanks.
Thanks for using the correct terminology i.e. hemostats. You got stream cred.
I'm from Ann Arbor. Most people here call them roach clips! 🙂
Excellent video!!! Thank you!🧔🏼♂️👍
Thanks for the complement!
Dude get your framing right. The half head in the picture is really distracting
I don't spend a lot of effort on production, just content. I needed the camera close.
Hey brother! You are the BEST! I just tied my first “ fishable” fly( grave digger) on the DIY vice YOU put on the web. I’m ecstatic! KEEP GOING! You are making a difference in people’s lives! That is the best gift to this world. You have a follower for life. Tight lines!

I also have learned to tie a Davey knot. For me it’s the easiest for small flys / low light conditions. Cheers
Great knot!
Ha for a country that has possibly provided the highest quality fly fishing gear ever through the years from Sage downwards it sure looks like you are about to give it all up to cheap Chinese crap produced by exploited workers under a non democratic regime! Maybe that’s what’s about to happen in the greatest country in world as well come November ,it’s not just bargains on line from Temu ,there’s more sinister plans afoot and the average American worker will soon find out what when that reality star takes over at the White House !
Brother, I applaud you!! I lost everything in the divorce and had a regal vice. Depressed and struggling to feed my kid, you gave us a way to bond and have a great time in the water. Ty Keep it up!
Made my day!
Great informative video, thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Why would buy from a Chinese outfit when you can guess where the money goes?!
@@johnguth5376 Most Fly Fishing gear and flies come from china now. Even the phone I'm typing on now and probably yours too.. Mostly I was seeing what the quality level was and it was just OK.
Mega Thx!
thanks for commenting!
2 bober stoppers and 1.5mm tippet ring. Pass the line through the center of the tippet ring. Use bober stoppers to control where you want it on the leader.
I've done that. I keep losing the bobber stopers.
@@MikeMouradian what line are you using?
@@MrRourk 5 wt line with 3 or 4x tippit
@@MikeMouradian you have to use monofilament. Fly fishing tippet is slicker and thinner. They just slide and don't bite in.
@@MrRourk Ha Ha! I meant I keep dropping the stoppers into the grass and water and the bottom of my bag. I have not used a tippet ring but many of my buddies swear by them. I'll have to try that. I like to try different methods and I love hearing about different techniques.
Ive watched scads of dropper videos. You sir, made the best video I’ve seen. Thank you!
Thanks I appreciate that!
Excellent review. Thank you.
thanks!
Nice trick. I use a similar method for starting my dropper rig around my finger, and then slipping the loop over the dry fly hook before cinching it down.
Thats how I came up with this.
FYI since u showed the hemostat to tie a clinch, u can use the hemostat to tie a surgeons knot or even better to tie an ORVIS knot to add tippet to your leader. just check out some video. but it makes adding tippet a breeze in the river!!!!
Yes it works great on a surgeons too! I'll have to try it on an Orvis knot.
Thank you! I’ll give this a try this weekend.
Great tip. Do you plan on doing anymore tying videos?
I mix them in as needed. I tie pretty simple flies that work. do you have a request?
Maybe a simple streamer pattern?

I just recently discovered your videos. They are so informative! Thanks for continuing to create content. The Hemostat clinch knot is a good tip, but how is a guy with deteriorating vision supposed to thread a size 20 or smaller in his tippet? Do you have any tips there, beyond wearing cheaters around my neck?
